Health Food Store Shopping Certified Organically Grown Food Interview with Victor Valderramos
Hi, my name is Victor Valderramos. I’m the produce supervisor here at Erewhon Natural Foods. The main difference between our store and the commercial stores is we provide a variety of organic produce, and we’re 95% organic and 5% conventional. Farmers that want to get certified organic have to go through a four-year process to get certified. They pay high amounts of money just to be inspected. Once they go through constant inspections, which is soil, water. Everything that they have in their farm or in their crop will be inspected for those four years. Then after that, once they pass that exam, they're certified organic. That’s how you know.
One of my goals as a produce supervisor is to check to make sure that the product is, indeed, organic by getting certification slips, finding out where they're located, where their farms are at, having constant information and check-ups with the farmers, with the growers. They give me feedback; they bring me samples. Information like that is crucial because then we find out from them that it is pure and organic. If you compare a conventional banana with an organic banana, it is going to be phenomenal the organic. You're not going to have that aftertaste that little thing in the back because organic is pure. It has no aftertaste. You're tasting it right from Mother Nature, straight to you.
Black kale: kale is one of our finest, nutritious vegetables that you're going to find here, and it’s high in minerals. Daikon radish: very popular and very nutritious for the body and for you as well. Aloe vera: aloe vera is one of the purest forms of aloe, locally grown here in California, beneficial for the body and externally as well helpful for everything.
Organically grown food will cost more, but remember, you are getting fine quality produce that will benefit you and your family.
